How to Prepare for a Winter Storm

11/11/2021 (Permalink)

As temperatures start to drop, staying warm and safe can be a challenge. Winter storms can bring cold temperatures, power failures, loss of communication services, and icy roads. To keep yourself and your loved ones safe, you should know how to prepare your home and your car before a winter storm hits. Here are some great tips on how to best prepare:

  • Plan ahead. If you are in an area prone to winter weather, be sure to create a communication and disaster plan for your family ahead of time.
  • Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on your home or other structure during a storm.
  • Create an emergency car kit. If you find yourself caught in a storm while driving it is important to have the essentials including: a portable charger, batteries, extra hats, coats, mittens, and blankets, a windshield scraper, a shovel, flashlight, water, first aid kit and jumper cables.
  • In the event of a winter storm, listen to weather forecast and check your emergency supplies.
  • Bring pets indoors and insure outdoor pets have shelter and access to unfrozen water.
