Ice Dams in Wisconsin

Ice Dams can create some water damage on your home #SERVPROsouthwestwaukeshacounty #wisconsinwinter #icedams

Fox6 News Does Story About Ice Dams With SERVPRO of Southwest Waukesha County March 2019 was a very cold month in Wisconsin. The extremely cold weather caused thousands of homes in Southeastern Wisconsin to develop ice dams on roof tops. Weather related stories are always important to the community which is why Fox6 News asked to interview Todd Szada, co-owner of SERVPRO of Southwest Waukesha County, and to do a news story about a typical home with current ice dam issues.

Icicles hanging along the edge of your roof are an indication that water is freezing on the roof before it can run off.  They may be cute to look at, but you do not want them.  When you see icicles hanging down, then you likely have ice dams forming above them.  It's also possible that you have got warm air escaping through seams where your roof meets masonry like a chimney.  In both cases, you want to find a solution to eliminate these problems.

Tips to Prevent Ice Dams

1. Use a roof rake during heavy snow

2. Be sure that debris is cleared from rain gutters; leaves, twigs and small branches

3. Clean out the cage-like drain hubs where leaves, dirt and debris tend to collect on the roof.

4. Cut back tree limbs hanging over the roof before winter hits

5. Inspect your roof for holes, indentations and compromised seams

6. Schedule periodic inspections of the roof

7. Have an insulation professional determine if  you have the proper amount of insulation and ventilation in your home or business.
