Ice Storms Safety Tips

12/9/2021 (Permalink)

Ice storms can be dangerous so it's necessary to understand them to properly prepare for the threats they can bring.

Here four things you need to know about ice storms and how to prepare.

  • Ice forms when freezing rain accumulates on surfaces and the ground, creating a layer of ice and making roads slick. Avoid driving if possible during an ice storm.
  • Heavy ice buildup on tree branches and power lines can cause them to fall. Be aware of the hazards formed by downed branches and powerlines and move cars and other property out of harm's way before the storm if possible.
  • Be aware of your area- places where the temperature drops below freezing in winter are most likely to experience ice storms, however ice storms that strike farther south can be especially dangerous where there are limited supplies to treat roadways and deal with cold conditions.
  • It's best to be prepared- make sure you have enough non-perishable food and any supplies you may need including water, prescriptions and a first aid kit. If you lose power. it is a good idea to have flashlights, batteries or candles on hand.
